Topher Conway

Role in the network: The SV Angel Managing Partner who “works particularly closely with OpenAI” — and simultaneously manages the fund’s relationships with Coinbase (Worldcoin investor whose CLO sits on VotingWorks’ board), Stripe (Moritz board seat), Anduril (defense AI), and Sierra (founded by Bret Taylor, OpenAI’s board chair) — making him the Conway family’s operational bridge between AI development, election infrastructure investors, defense technology, and OpenAI’s governance.

Bio

Christopher “Topher” Conway is a Managing Partner of SV Angel, the venture fund founded by his father Ron Conway. He joined SV Angel in 2009 at its founding, coming from a background in business development and sales at EQAL, a social media company. He had previously held positions at eCost and a 2004 summer internship in Google’s Direct Sales Organization. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History from UCLA and is a member of the UCLA VC Fund. [1] [2] [3]

Topher became co-managing partner in May 2015 when David Lee departed SV Angel “effective immediately” — a departure described as acrimonious, with Ron Conway telling limited partners that “Lee had breached his trust” over compensation disputes. Topher’s elevation was the formalization of a family succession: the son taking operational control from a non-family partner. [4] [5]

He has been recognized on the Forbes Midas List (2023, 2024) — the ranking of the world’s top 100 venture capitalists — and the Forbes Midas Seed List (2022, 2023, 2024). He was named to Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2015. [1] [2]

The Portfolio Map

SV Angel’s website explicitly lists the companies Topher “works particularly closely with.” This is not a passive portfolio — it’s an active operational relationship list. The companies and their investigation connections: [1]

The Sierra-OpenAI bridge: Topher works closely with both Sierra (Bret Taylor’s company) AND OpenAI (where Bret Taylor is board chair). The same investor manages relationships with both the CEO of a company and the company where that CEO serves as board chair. Taylor’s dual role — Sierra CEO and OpenAI board chair — creates a governance question that Topher’s simultaneous operational relationship with both entities underscores.

Philanthropy

Topher’s philanthropic involvements, per Crunchbase: [2]

  • Family House — housing for families of children with cancer (SF)
  • College Track — college completion program for underserved students
  • THORN Foundation — Ashton Kutcher’s anti-child-exploitation technology organization
  • Giffords.org — Gabby Giffords’ gun safety organization (tracks with Ron Conway’s gun control advocacy)
  • TGR Foundation — Tiger Woods’ youth development foundation (Ron Conway sits on Tiger Woods Foundation board)
  • Team RWB — veterans’ community engagement

The philanthropic portfolio mirrors the father’s: gun control, children’s welfare, veterans. The family’s charitable commitments and political commitments reinforce each other.

Nodes and Open Questions

  1. What does “works particularly closely with OpenAI” mean? Does SV Angel have board observer rights? Does Topher attend board meetings? Does he have access to non-public information about OpenAI’s commercial partnerships (Formation Bio/Muse, Helion, Oklo)?
  2. The Sierra-OpenAI governance bridge: Topher manages SV Angel’s relationship with Sierra (Bret Taylor, CEO) and OpenAI (Bret Taylor, board chair). Does information flow between these relationships? When Taylor makes governance decisions at OpenAI, is he informed by the commercial interests of Sierra, which shares an investor relationship manager?
  3. Coinbase → Worldcoin → VotingWorks: Topher manages the Coinbase relationship. Coinbase Ventures invested in Worldcoin. Coinbase’s CLO sits on VotingWorks’ board. Does Topher’s Coinbase relationship extend to awareness of or influence over Coinbase Ventures’ portfolio (including Worldcoin)?
  4. Anduril and defense AI: Topher works closely with Anduril, a defense technology company. Does SV Angel’s Anduril relationship create access to defense/intelligence community networks that intersect with AI policy discussions (the AI Ad Hoc Workgroup Ron Conway founded)?
  5. The EQAL background: What was EQAL? A social media company — but its specific operations, clients, and what Topher did there in business development may reveal pre-SV Angel network connections.
